Solar printing | Cyanotype – Karen Ruet
July 7 @ 9:00 am - 4:00 pm
$89.00 – $119.00ONE-DAY WORKSHOP – Sunday, July 7 | 9 am – 4 pm
In this introductory course, you’ll learn all the steps required to create your own cyanotype prints. From an introduction to tools and materials, to creating images on beautiful watercolour paper using exposure to natural light. Discover how to print direct positives using feathers, plants and other found materials. Students will also have the option of printing with photographic negatives by sending the instructor photographs before the workshop that they can print during the day (2 images per student). Create unique patterns and designs for one of a kind prints and enjoy the wonder of coating your paper with a bright green liquid that will turn silver in the sun and then blue when we remove materials and soak our paper in water to develop it! This process can also be applied to other surfaces, like wood, and cloth.
Discovered in 1841, Cyanotype printing is one of the oldest photographic printing processes that uses photosensitive solutions and exposure to ultraviolet light (the sun). The resulting image can be cyan blue, or Prussian blue. Participants will complete the workshop with archival prints to take home that can be framed for their own homes or be given as unique gifts.

THE INSTRUCTOR:
Karen Ruet is an Instructor in the Photography/Videography diploma program, who loves hands on media, especially darkroom processes. After initially studying photography at Toronto Metropolitan University, she pursued her dream of becoming a photographer at NBCCD and fell in love with darkroom work and alternative processes. She took many workshops and classes and created unique images using her own negatives and found botanical and other materials. After her graduation, Karen worked as a freelance photographer for the Telegraph Journal, and soon after added her writing skills from Acadia University to write stories for the New Brunswick Reader before becoming a regular arts columnist at the paper. She also worked as the Coordinator of Gallery Connexion before becoming the Coordinator of NBCCD’s George Fry Gallery. During her time at Gallery Connexion, she started teaching at NBCCD. In 2015, Karen co-curated a 19-person contemporary New Brunswick photography exhibition at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery with then CEO and chief curator at the gallery, Terry Graff called Phantom Presence.
